Another Someone - Edinburgh 2010

Whatsonstage ****

My God I loved this. Part song-cycle, part chat, part play, this RashDash show blends naturalistic dialogue and acting with tight movement sequences, quasi musical theatre songs and solos from the narrator/singer-songwriter (fabulous Becky Wilkie).

The story she tells is about three 20-somethings deciding what (if anything) to do with their lives and how their relationships evolve. A courting scene between two of them is lovely and the early morning dance sequence is a wow. Disappointingly, it loses its way two thirds of the way through and its theme about being someone (I want to be someone. You dont.) and being happy vanishes into a nicely acted but tangential cul-de-sac.

Even so, the awesome talent of the company cannot be denied. Becky Wilkie is the first among equals, touched with the conversational song-stylings of Lily Allen and Rufus Wainwright and a beguiling warmth and humour. It may be a four-star show in its present (and easily fixable) form, but Wilkie is a five-star talent.
