Created with second year students on the Arts Ed Musical Theatre course, this edited version of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical retained all the strands of plot and all the key musical moments but presented them in a highly stylised ensemble context.
With two actors playing each of the two central characters, Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, to show different facets of their characters at different points, and with the ensemble on stage throughout like a Greek chorus, this version of CAROUSEL not only emphasised the New England community at the centre of the story but provided the best possible showcase for the company of young actors - which was the chief purpose of the project.
Performed infront of an attentive and enthusiastic audience of fellow students, CAROUSEL benefitted from some terrific performances from performers destined for success on the professional stage and proved once again why Rodgers and Hammerstein both rated it as their greatest achievement.
Since graduating, members of the cast have gone on to appear in Les Miserables, Legally Blonde and Ghost and the tour of Cats amongst others.
