Sexual Perversity in Chicago was first presented as a university workshop production in December 1998. Re-cast the following summer and based closely on the workshopped version but faster-paced and with new music and a sex scene, Perversity began its long run of success at London's Millfield Theatre, where it was attended by several major figures from the theatre industries including Mike Leigh.
It went on to play two hugely popular and acclaimed runs at Edinburgh, before being asked to return to London by the Greenwich Playhouse, where it finally concluded.
Fast-paced and sexually-charged, 34 scenes flew by in just over 50 minutes, linked with a dance soundtrack and distinguished by the sharply defined characterisations of the young cast.
Mamet's first hit, Perversity has lost none of its capacity to titillate, shock and entertain, and this production – notable for its visual pizzazz, its thrilling pace, and the bare buttocks of one of the actors – scored a direct hit with audiences everywhere it played, despite receiving almost no press coverage.
